ARCHITECTURE

futur, architecten achtergael by hannelore veelaert

It’s still crazy busy here, which explains the lack of updates on the blog.  My thesis deadline is coming closer, and in between I’m mostly trying to take time to catch up with friends, work on photography jobs and attend a few exciting blogging events.  (More on those later, but if you want to stay up to date, you can follow me on instagram.)  Speaking of photography jobs, the past months I’ve been shooting buildings all over Flanders and Brussels for an engineering office.  I’ve selected a few of my favorites to show here on the blog and updated my portfolio.  If you want to know more about the projects I photographed, you can hover over the photo to find out the architect. WINDOWS

Photographer Nick Olson and designer Lilah Horwitz quit their jobs to realize their dream: a house entirely made out of windows in the mountains of West Virginia.  The idea arose only one year before, when Nick took Lilah on their first date in these woods and the wonderful sunset inspired them to think of a house made out of windows, where the sunset would never be contained within a small space.  The perfect place to take some rest from the busy city life.

INGENIOUS HOMES IN UNEXPECTED PLACES

Very interesting talk by architectural photographer Iwan Baan about humanity’s ability to survive and make a home anywhere without the help of architects or town planners.  These inspring examples are illustrated by Baan’s amazing photographs (maybe this calls for a blogpost devoted to his work?) and they are definitely worth 15 minutes of your time.

THINGS THAT MAKE ME SMILE

Two architecture students created the perfect notebook for the architects among us: it contains several sizes of grids so you can easily draw on the correct scale, but most importantly, it also is a guide with measurements of all frequently used building elements, design information such as line weigths and font sizes, technical guidelines for structures, architectural references and living scenarios of different kinds of rooms.  You can support them here to get the A:Log in production!  (source)

Charles Sowers designed a kinetic installation on the facade of the Randall Museum in San Francisco, consisting of 612 rotating aluminium weather vanes, all moving individually and together visualising the flow of the wind.  Pretty cool.  (source)

Kanye West compared himself to Le Corbusier, claiming he is a ‘minimalist in a rapper’s body’.  Architizer decided to put him to the test and compared Kanye’s lyrics with Corbu’s designs.  See how that worked out here.

Design studio Nendo is responsible for this pop-up Starbucks coffee shop in Tokyo.  The shop resembles a library, where the book covers have nine different colors, representing nine different coffees.  The empty books have explanations on the cover about the type of coffee, and by taking a book to the counter, clients can order the corresponding coffee.  Even though I refuse to buy coffee at Starbucks (I prefer supporting the local coffee shops and I think Starbucks is way overpriced), I think I would have a hard time passing this one up…  (source)

CHICAGO

When I’m blogging about something related to my architecture studies, does that even count as a study break?  Hmmm.  Annyway, Al Boardman animated 5 skyscrapers in Chicago into this wonderful video.

PS.  I have my first exam this afternoon… Wish me luck!
